An advocate for education, Michelle was not only a longtime member of the Naperville Junior Woman’s Club and dedicated volunteer, she was also the Director of Communications for District 203 at the time of her passing in May of 2018. We were honored to be a small part of her short but brilliant life, and it is our hope and intention that her legacy of service will live on through these scholarship awards.
NJWC Michelle LaFrey Fregoso Scholarship Program annually awards scholarships to deserving high school seniors who reside within the boundaries of either the Naperville Community School District 203 or the Indian Prairie School District 204.
Ainsley, the daughter of Scott and Kristi, is a senior at Waubonsie Valley High School with aspirations to pursue a degree in Elementary Education. Her teaching goal goes beyond imparting knowledge. It is about nurturing curiosity and fostering a love for learning in each of her students. For the past four years, she has served as a small group leader and mentor to more than 20 6th-grade girls at Community Christian Church. Ainsley is also the Founder and leader of the Fill Your Cup organization, where she has successfully fundraised to provide support to families facing a childhood cancer diagnosis. Additionally, she volunteers for Special Spaces, an organization devoted to creating dream bedroom makeovers for children with cancer. Ainsley's dedication has been recognized with the National "Assurance Act of Kindness" award presented by the Special Spaces organization.
Emily, the daughter of Ronald and Clare, is a senior at Naperville Central High School. She is planning to pursue a degree in Environmental Studies and Ecology. Emily's volunteer work at Naperville Humane Society has accumulated over 150 hours, earning her the Presidential Service Award in 2023 for volunteering more than 100 hours. Throughout the years, she has also dedicated her time to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. At the age of 10, she was chosen as one of the 20 youth in Illinois to be an IL JDRF Youth Ambassador, a role she held for four years. Emily was honored with the Harold Moser Service Award from Lincoln Junior High School in 7th grade. As an IL JDRF Youth Ambassador, she had the opportunity to address hundreds of Chicago Cubs staff at Wrigley Field during their National Diabetes ballpark day. Additionally, she volunteers each year at the JDRF One Dream Gala in Chicago, which is the organization's largest national fundraiser.
Naomi, the daughter of Philip and Jennifer, is a senior at Metea Valley High School. She plans to pursue a degree in Music Education and Musical Theater. Naomi is actively involved in volunteering at her church, serving as a worship leader, band member, leader of the youth band, student leader for the Youth Leadership Team, preschool Sunday School teacher, and summer Vacation Bible School Teacher. She has taken part in various community outreach programs with local churches. Additionally, Naomi has volunteered with the Christian Youth Theater's "High School Pursuing Excellence" Team and assisted in directing Granger Middle School's musical, "Willy Wonka." Her dedication to Christian Youth Theater demonstrates hard work, respect, a pursuit of excellence, and inclusivity towards all castmates. Naomi was honored with the Watchdog Award, presented by the directors, for looking out for her fellow cast members both on and off the stage.
